This text focuses on the study of the book Emilio, authored by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and contributions to Education and Scientific Literacy. In the book Emilio, education aims to form the free human being, as well as to form for freedom, respecting the phases of the natural constitution of the human being. The work is based on treating children freely, respecting their basic needs. The theme is justified in view of the teacher education aiming at the contributions of Rousseau's thought, on the education and literacy of the child. As a problematization, it is questioned what literacy is and how it should be carried out according to the educational theory of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The aim is to understand how the idea of autonomy proposed in literacy in the author's thinking occurs. To develop this work, the bibliographic research methodology was used.
