Abstract

This paper explores the correlation between the subjects presented in the crime segment of broadcast journalism and the emphasis placed in the anchor’s discourse. The research that culminates in this study posits that the stories from the crime segment needs a unique approach, but there exist topics that require more conspicuous highlights, which is mirrored in the execution of stress, both in its function/motivation and in the physical manifestation of speech. The purpose of our study was to examine the connection between the topic discussed and the execution of emphasis in the crime segment. To fulfill the aim of the study and validate the hypothesis, the methodology employed involved initially selecting the news broadcasts, networks, and journalists investigated, followed by the selection and download of videos, listening and perception of stresses, acoustic analysis of perceived emphasis, analysis of emphasis by Type of Emphasis and Overall Composition of Emphasis, and comparison of the data gathered. The data collected were compared in different parallels: between Type of Emphasis and topic discussed, and between Overall Composition of Emphasis and topic discussed. Our findings indicated a trend that specific topics engender more pronounced behaviors in the use of emphasis, both in terms of the choice of Type and the acoustic execution of these emphasis.
